Baby
cribs need to be safe. Is yours?
When
it comes time to look for baby cribs do you know what to look
for? You want it to be safe. Often even though babies use
cribs until they are two or three you will think about
purchasing a second hand one. Are you aware for instance, that
baby cribs made before 1990, could be hazardous to your
child’s health.
When
purchasing a crib there are a number of things to look for.
You may want to avoid second hand baby cribs because you do
not know how old it is. If it was made before 1973 it may have
been painted with lead paint. If you do choose to purchase a
second hand crib then be prepared to take all the paint off,
sandpaper all the edges to ensure there are no rough spots
that could create splinters.
Whether
you look at second hand or new baby cribs there are several
things you will need to look for when you go looking at baby
cribs. When you go looking take a tape measure with you. You
will need to make sure the slats, are at least 2 3/8 inches.
Also check to see that the crib mattress fits snugly, no more
than two fingers between the side and mattress. Also make sure
it has sturdy mattress supports, which connects to the crib
sides securely.
Measure
the baby cribs for how high and low the drop side works. Does
it have drop sides on both sides or only on one? Make sure the
measurement of the drop side is 9inches above the mattress
support at it lowest and at least 26inches above the mattress
at it’s highest. Check the locking mechanism which secures
the drop side is really good.
Baby
cribs come in all types. You may want a standard with a single
drop side. You may want to spend a little more and purchase a
convertible, which will convert from a crib to a day bed or
regular full sized bed. Then for more elegance and classical
look you may want to get a canopy. No matter what kind of crib
you decide to buy for your child ensure it is safe.
