Sorters,
stackers and blocks let children build their imagination
Young
children have a lot to learn and one of the first skills they
must master is how to coordinate the use of their fingers and
eyes. They can do this by playing with sorters, stackers and
blocks. Sorters, stackers and blocks often are a child’s
first toys. Sorters are usually puzzle like many-sided
objects. They have different shaped holes cut into then in
different sizes. The sorter comes with matching pieces that
fit into the shaped holes cut into the main part of the toy.
Each hole has a shaped piece made to fit it. The object for
the young child is to fit the right shaped piece into the
right hole. These pieces are usually fairly large taking into
account the lack of manual dexterity in young children. Small
pieces are too difficult for them to manage and pose a
chocking hazard as well.
Sorters,
stackers and blocks can work together as well. Stackers are
usually plastic blocks or shapes made in different colors and
graduating sizes. The child tries to stack them in the correct
order to complete a nice tall tower that they can knock over
and build all over again. Blocks are much the same and were at
one time always made from wood. Now they are made from plastic
as well.
